Piston rods made from Inconel 625
For the hydraulic piston rods discussed in Sections 16.2 and 16.3 mechanical loads are combined with tribocorrosion. The high pressure inside the cylinder acts on the seals to ensure a leak-free sealing by means of a uniform distributed seal contact pressing on the piston rod surface. The contact pressure of the seals on the piston rod surface can be in the range of 50 N/mm2 at 160 bar system pressure. If a hard particle is imbedded into the seal the contact pressures will be increased by several orders of magnitude. For hard coatings such point load can cause both median and lateral cracks underneath the surface inside the coating at locations with non-homogeneous properties or at the substrate interface. The same effect is evident for imbedded hard particles in the guide bands combined with the cyclic tensile and bending loading at the packing box generating high contact pressures.
